Welcome to North Jersey Judo specializing in Martial Arts and Fitness

What is Judo?

Judo is a grappling martial art similar to jiu-jitsu, but does NOT involve punching or kicking.  Judo places emphasis on throws, pins, and submission holds such as strangles (+13 yrs only) and arm locks (+17 years only).  From a standing position involves techniques that allow you to lift and throw you or opponents onto their backs.  On the ground, it includes techniques that allow you to pin opponents down to the ground, control them and apply various choke holds or joint locks until submission.

(North Bergen, NJ) – North Jersey Judo picks up right were they left off and attended the Tech Judo Tournament in North Bergen, NJ.  Athletes from all areas of NJ, NY, PA came to compete in this event on Super Bowl Sunday.

Josh Myers (Team North Jersey Judo) took 1st place in what was his first ever Judo Tournament.  Josh delivered 2 Osoto Garis (Step, Pull & Swipe Throw) for a full point throw in both of his matches to capture Tech Judo Gold.  Along with Judo Josh also participates in Flag Football in Pompton Lakes, NJ and he is a natural athlete on the grid iron or on a tournament mat.

Taylor Carmichael (Team North Jersey Judo) took 1st place in the girls division.  Taylor’s first match was won by using an Ouchi Gari (Inner Leg Reap) for a full point throw.  During this match Taylor hurt her ankle but held on to go another round for another win to capture Tech Judo Gold.  Taylor makes smart choices when she’s out on the mat and doesn’t hesitate when she commits to a throw.

Jordan Simone (Team North Jersey Judo) took 1st place winning 2 matches.  His first match was against NJJ team mate Julian Cardone for a full point throw using a leg pick up.  He later does a great job of pinning his next opponent for a pin.  Jordan is a scraper for lack of a better word.  He continues to grind his way into pins on the ground and likes to stay low for the shoot.

Julian Cardone (Team North Jersey Judo) took 2nd place winning 1 out of 2 matches.  His winning match was done by securing a Kesa Gatame (Scarf Hold Pin) for 25 seconds for the win and Tech Judo Silver.  Julian has good Judo skills that he brought to NJJ.  He is also a chess player which explains his strategic choices he makes when he’s out on the mat.

Ramon Hernandez Junior (Team North Jersey Judo) took 3rd place and won 1 out of 3 matches.  His one win was with a Koshi Guruma (Around the Neck Lock Hip Throw) for the Tech Judo Bronze.  His other matches were very tough as Junior will now face tougher opponents as he moves up in rank.  Junior also participates in baseball, soccer and flag football in Pompton Lakes, NJ.

Joe Simone (Team North Jersey Judo) took 3rd place and won 1 out of 2 matches.  He got his one win by using Morote Gari (The Double Leg) for an instant win for the Tech Judo Bronze.  Joe also participates in other sports like wrestling and football.  He has natural athletic ability and he is a joy to watch when surrounded by both his brothers (Jordan and Anthony).

Ramon Hernandez (Team North Jersey Judo Head Coach) took 1st place by winning 2 matches.  First match was against an experience shoulder thrower.  Ramon was able to dominate on the grip not leaving any room his opponent to get a chance on the shoulder throw.  Ramon scored a ½ point Wazari and continued to maintain the upper hand on the grips to come away with the win.  On the second match Ramon faced a heavy guy (250 lbs) but was able to pull off an Uchi Mata (Inner Thigh Throw) for the Tech Judo Gold.

Notes from Coach:
All competitors did very well at this event.  I would also like to give out special congratulations to Jordan Simone, Joe Simone and Josh Myers because it was their first Judo Tournament.  North Jersey Judo will be getting prepared for the New Jersey Judo State Championship coming in March 2009.  Also big thanks to Clyde Worthen and his staff for running the tournament.  Also big thanks to Billy Martin for running the officials.  With out these 2 guys we wouldn’t be able to compete at this event.

P.S. Let’s also congratulate the Pittsburgh Steelers for the BEST PLAYED SUPERBOWL EVER!  Yes I’m a fan and have been a fan since 1992.
