(Paterson, NJ) – Athletes from all areas of New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania and Canada competed in the Summer Slam Judo Championship held on June 10th in Paterson, NJ. Joe Stambouly (Team North Jersey Judo) took 2nd place in his division. Stambouly put up an impressive win on his first match throwing his opponent for a full point throw using a single leg pick up ending the match for an instant win. Stambouly lost his second match securing him a second place finish. Stambouly is a strong competitor using pick ups and Koshi Guruma as his main throws. It won’t be long before he is at the top with a gold medal at the next tournament. Brandon Kui (Team North Jersey Judo) took 2nd place in his division. Kui lost his first match only on points. In his second match Kui put points on the board and then pinned his opponent for a full point securing him a 2nd place finish. Kui is also a strong competitor showing very strong ground grappling skills. It won’t be long before Kui makes his mark at the local Judo Tournaments. Jimmy Otten (Team North Jersey Judo) took 2nd place in his division. Otten lost his first match by a full point throw. In his second match Otten was able to pin his opponent for a full point securing him a 2nd place finish. Otten is a disciplined player and not only doesn’t miss a practice but he also practices at home making his father tap out when practicing his Judo out of the dojo. Otten is our most skilled teenager at North Jersey Judo. Charlie Cunningham (Team North Jersey Judo) took 3rd place in a crowded 5 man division. Cunningham lost his first match but came back and put 2 impressive wins together. He lost his fourth match securing him 3rd place but considering he could have gone home with no medal made this experience worth going. Right now Charlie is the most devoted adult Judoka at North Jersey Judo. William Kui (Team North Jersey Judo) was the highlight of our team and took first place in his division. Kui (a/k/a Billy the Kid) put two impressive wins together by pinning both of his opponents using Kesa Gatame. Not only is Kui a devoted and disciplined player, he also shows a great interest in Judo and makes every practice count. Kui is right now the best student in our junior class. Notes from Coach: All competitors did very well for the first and second outing at a Judo Tournament. We look forward to watching them in future judo tournaments to come.
