Welcome to North Jersey Judo specializing in Martial Arts and Fitness

What is Judo?

Judo is a grappling martial art similar to jiu-jitsu, but does NOT involve punching or kicking.  Judo places emphasis on throws, pins, and submission holds such as strangles (+13 yrs only) and arm locks (+17 years only).  From a standing position involves techniques that allow you to lift and throw you or opponents onto their backs.  On the ground, it includes techniques that allow you to pin opponents down to the ground, control them and apply various choke holds or joint locks until submission.

(Pompton Plains, NJ) – Today I’m pleased to announce that North Jersey Judo played host to an 8 hour clinic headed by Rhadi Ferguson 2004 Olympian from Florida.  By his side Taraje Williams-Murray 2004 and 2008 Olympian both of them in the sport of Judo.  The name of the clinic was JUDO: FROM COMPETENCE TO EXCELLENCE and lunch was sponsored by Hatashita Sports.

The first 4 hours of our clinic was designed to discuss the Martial Art of Judo vs. the sport of Judo and the steps to take for a successful approach.  During this time Rhadi & Taraje did a great job of showing where a Judo practitioner can make the most positive impact using the preparation and the philosophies behind choosing this path.  They really wanted to plant the seed in our minds what was the difference between Judo tactics, strategy, pace and tempo and why these are an important ingredients that must be included in anyone’s game plan.

During lunch we all had a chance to pick Rhadi & Taraje’s brain on this past Olympics, up coming US Nationals and current players that are still out there in tournament mode.  It’s always fun when you can sit and chat with Olympians and eat at the same time.

Well if the morning was great the afternoon was spectacular.  We all put on our Judo Gis rolled around and both Rhadi & Taraje showed some great stuff one of them being a successful Morote Gari and how it adds to anyone’s Judo.  It was great to see them both breaking down their throws from start to finish and with the end in mind which was the transition into the ground game.  Their level of understanding was also far greater then anyone else in the room me included.  It just goes to show you how both of them left no question un-answered.  It was also great watching them collaborate with each other about gripping, newaza & tachiwaza.  Rhadi & Taraje are really on the same page.  All in all a great seminar to attend and I would jump at the chance to host again or go to another one near by.  The above is a small summary about what went on and almost impossible to describe.  You really have to see it with your own eyes.
