(Paterson, NJ) – Athletes from all areas of New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania and Massachusetts competed in the North East Judo Championship this weekend.

Joey Stambouly (Team North Jersey Judo) took 1st place beating both of his opponents with 2 full point throws.  Stambouly used a Te Guruma (Single Leg Pickup) and followed it up with a Koshi Guruma (around the neck hip throw) for his second instant win and crushing his opponent in the process.

Brandon Kui (Team North Jersey Judo) took 1st place beating both of his opponents with 1 full point throw for a left side Ippon Seoinage (Shoulder Throw) and followed it up with a pin for 25 seconds.

William Kui (Team North Jersey Judo) took 1st place beating both of his opponents with 1 full point throw using an Ippon Seoinage (Shoulder Throw) and he followed it up with a pin for 25 seconds.

Jimmy Otten (Team North Jersey Judo) took 1st place beating 3 opponents with 2 full point throws and 1 pin.  Otten competed in a harder division earlier nor fairing well but was still able to defeat his later opponents in this division.

Tyler Swanson (Team North Jersey Judo) took 3rd place beating his 1st opponent for a full point throw.  Swanson then lost his next 2 but winning his first match was enough to secure him a bronze medal.

Ken Carmichael (Team North Jersey Judo) took 1st place beating 5 opponents using 3 throws for instant wins and followed it up with 2 wins on the ground using Newaza (mat grappling).  Carmichael first throw was a single leg pick up followed by 2 Ippon Seoinage resulting in 3 instant wins in the first 3 matches.  He then was able to use a Hadakajimi (naked choke) in his fourth match and ended with a pin in match 5 to secure first place.

Notes from Coach:

All competitors did very well during their latest challenge at the North East Judo Championship.  Most of them have a wrestling background which helps them with their Judo.  Judo is a great way to cross train during the off season for any wrestler.  I look forward to seeing these competitors at future Judo tournaments and their up coming 2007/2008 wrestling season.
