Welcome to North Jersey Judo specializing in Martial Arts and Fitness

What is Judo?

Judo is a grappling martial art similar to jiu-jitsu, but does NOT involve punching or kicking.  Judo places emphasis on throws, pins, and submission holds such as strangles (+13 yrs only) and arm locks (+17 years only).  From a standing position involves techniques that allow you to lift and throw you or opponents onto their backs.  On the ground, it includes techniques that allow you to pin opponents down to the ground, control them and apply various choke holds or joint locks until submission.

North Jersey Judo of Pompton Plains, NJ Wins 3 Gold Medals in Maryland!

(Baltimore, MD) – Athletes from up and down the East Cost gathered to compete at the Eastern Open Judo Championship this past Labor Day weekend in Baltimore, MD.  North Jersey Judo of Pompton Plains entered 5 players into this regional tournament.

Our 2 junior competitors were Charlie Cunningham Jr. and Ramon Hernandez Junior.  Charlie Jr. competed in the junior division and fought 5 times to place 2nd to get the Silver Medal.  Charlie lost his second match but kept his composure to win the rest of his matches to claim his spot on the medal stand.  Charlie continues to impress as he has competed in 4 tournaments this summer to help prepare him self for the coming wrestling season and also to refine his Judo tournament game.  Ramon Hernandez Jr. was also in the junior division.  Ramon won 1 match with an impressive 2 ½ point attacks to claim his one win but was knock out in the third round.  Ramon Jr. continues to impress as he also has competed in 4 tournaments this past summer.  Both Ramon Jr. and Charlie Jr. are apart of North Jersey Judo’s Wrestling program along with practicing Olympic tournament style Judo.  We look forward to watching them both prepare for future Judo and Wrestling tournaments in 2008.

William Paranto competed in his first tournament in the Senior Novice 178 weight division and went un-defeated for 5 matches to win 1st place for the Gold Medal.  William is a student at Rutgers and spent last semester in Spain attending classes there.  He took advice from Head Instructor Ramon Hernandez and kept up on his Judo training during his time away at a Judo club in Spain.  Europe is know for its great tradition in Judo which allowed William pick up where he left off with his training at North Jersey Judo.  During his 5 matches William faced higher ranks as high as green belt which makes it even more difficult since he is still a white belt not to mention the fact that this was William’s first tournament.

Charlie Cunningham Senior competed in the Master 178 weight division and went un-defeated for 2 matches to win 1st place for the Gold Medal.  Charlie faced 2 experienced brown belts in his quest for his very first Gold Medal and a spot at the top of the medal stand.  This is Charlie’s second tournament this summer and this win puts him on the fast track for his next promotion from yellow belt to green belt.  Charlie is a police officer with the Montclair, NJ Police Department and is a resident of Pequannock, NJ.

Ramon Hernandez Senior competed in the Black Belt 220 weight division very much under weight but went un-defeated for 3 matches to win 1st place for the Gold Medal and a spot at the top of the medal stand.  Ramon’s first match was won using a Judo shoulder throw which wrestlers refer to as a Japanese wizard throw for a full point for and an instant win.  He’s second match was for an inner thigh throw also for an instant win and his final match was won by using a sacrifice throw created off of a counter into an instant win.

Notes from coach:

All competitors did very well during this outing and I’m glad to see how active we’ve been this summer at both local and regional tournaments.  North Jersey Judo of Pompton Plains, NJ is a great affair for a lot of families in the Pompton Plains, Pequannock, Wayne, Pompton Lakes and other towns near by.  Often I’m asked who trains in Judo and why.  We’ve got company men doing Judo to improve stamina for their golf game, moms and dads working to get back into high school shape, police officers looking to gain every advantage out on duty and kids for just good old fun all side by side.  Judo is a fun sporting activity with Olympic aspirations and it’s for everyone.
