(Cranford, NJ) – Athletes from all areas of New Jersey and some from New York competed in the Cranford Judo Invitational Tournament this past Sunday.

Charlie Cunningham (Team North Jersey Judo) placed 2nd in the 65 point division.  Charlie Boy went through 4 tough matches before losing his 5th in the final for 1st place.  Charlie boy showed the true determination of a Cunningham as he comes from a strong wrestling family.  His last match was the only match keeping Charlie from being on top of the medal stand yesterday.  I look forward to seeing him develop as a good Judoka for Team North Jersey Judo.

Joey Carmichael (Team North Jersey Judo) also competed in the 65 point division and competed well.  He won his first match to advance into the second round.  His second match was a tough match.  This was Joey’s first tournament and I look forward to seeing him develop as a good Judoka for Team North Jersey Judo.  Joey comes from a strong wrestling family and shows signs of being a serious hip throwing Judo player.

Ramon Hernandez Junior (Team North Jersey Judo) competed in the 80 point division.  Junior had 6 tough matches to reach 3rd place.  Junior was the most impressive for our team as he continued to keep going one match after another to reach the medal stand.  This was Junior’s 4th tournament and you could tell he felt at ease out on the mat contending for a medal.  Junior is a 2nd generation Judo player in his family and I look forward to watching him develop as a good Judoka for Team North Jersey Judo.

Daniel Kilroy (Team North Jersey Judo) competed in the 110 point division.  Daniel had 4 matches to win 2nd place for our team and only lost once.  Daniel is strong on the ground and showed great awareness using the single leg pick up into a throw.  He also managed to create turnovers on his opponents when they were flat on their front side.  This was Daniel’s 1st tournament as a white belt facing opponents as high as blue belt.  I look forward to watching him develop as a good Judoka for Team North Jersey Judo.

Jimmy Otten (Team North Jersey Judo) competed in the 175 point division.  Jimmy had 5 tough matches for 3rd place.  Twice Jimmy was out weighed by 40 pounds but managed to control most of his opponents on the ground.  Jimmy also is a second generation wrestler in his family with a strong work ethic which was the reason he won 60 wrestling matches this year.  This is Jimmy’s 3rd outing at a Judo tournament and I look forward to watching him develop as a good Judoka for Team North Jersey Judo.

Ken Carmichael (Team North Jersey Judo & Instructor Candidate) competed in the 250 point division.  Ken had 5 tough matches only losing 1 and was able to take 2nd place.  In Ken’s division he faced 3 brown belts and was able to defeat 2 of them.  The only one that got Ken for a full point throw was a well known player on the national level.  Ken continues to impress and never disappoints when he’s competing.  I look forward to watching him develop as a good Judoka for Team North Jersey Judo.

Taylor Carmichael (Team North Jersey Judo) competed in the 80 point division and was on top of the medal stand placing 1st in a tough division.  Taylor is a gifted athlete and uses that ability to her advantage.  Taylor also uses 100% Judo to dismantle any Judoka she’s faced and hasn't used strength to gain advantage during any match so far.  I look forward to watching Taylor develop as a good Judoka for Tram North Jersey Judo.

Notes from Coach:
