Welcome to North Jersey Judo specializing in Martial Arts and Fitness

What is Judo?

Judo is a grappling martial art similar to jiu-jitsu, but does NOT involve punching or kicking.  Judo places emphasis on throws, pins, and submission holds such as strangles (+13 yrs only) and arm locks (+17 years only).  From a standing position involves techniques that allow you to lift and throw you or opponents onto their backs.  On the ground, it includes techniques that allow you to pin opponents down to the ground, control them and apply various choke holds or joint locks until submission.

On October 11, 2009 members of North Jersey Judo competed at the Cranford Judo Invitational in Cranford, NJ.  Cranford Judo Club is owned and operated by Yoshisda Yonezuka 2X US Olympic Head Coach in 1992-Barcelona Summer Games & 1988 Seoul Summer Games.  Sensei Yonezuka is also former instructor to Ramon Hernandez owner and operator of North Jersey Judo in Pompton Plains, NJ.  On November 1, 2009 members of North Jersey Judo also competed at the Tech Judo tournament in North Bergen, NJ.  Judo competitors from Judo clubs all over NY, NJ, CT, MA & PA went to these 2 events.

Ramon Hernandez Junior (Team North Jersey Judo) placed 3rd winning 2 out of 3 in his division.  Ramon was faced with competing against lefty players in every match which could have proved to be a difficult task.  Ramon will be preparing to close out the 2009 tournament season by competing at the Princeton Judo Invitational in November & the North East Judo Championship in December.

William Kui (Team North Jersey Judo) placed 1st winning all his matches in a 6 man division in Cranford, NJ.  William also placed 1st at the Tech Judo Invitational in North Bergen, NJ winning all his matches in a 3 man division.  William will switch gears and devote his time to wrestling now that November is here.

Brandon Kui (Team North Jersey Judo) placed 1st winning all his matches in a 5 man division in Cranford, NJ.  Brandon also place 1st at the Tech Judo Invitational winning all his matches in a 4 man division in North Bergen, NJ.  Brandon like his brother will enter wrestling season.

Peter Tropona (Team North Jersey Judo) place 3rd winning 1 match out of 3 in a 4 man division.  Peter had 1 win using a single leg pick-up throw for a full point throw for the instant win.  Peter is a former wrestler for Pequannock, NJ.

Note from coach: All competitors did very well this fall on the Judo tournament scene.  Next up will be the North Eastern Judo Championship held in Paterson, NJ in December.  The sport of Judo has been around since the late 1800’s and an Olympic Sport since 1964 Summer Games.  Judo unlike any other sport is unique in instilling: unshakable confidence, self esteem, and the ability to focus.  Judo also develops a level of body awareness and coordination that makes every participant a stronger, healthier and better all-around individual.  Anyone practicing Judo benefits from greater academic achievement, self-respect, increased strength, fitness, in both mind and body.  Look out for North Jersey Judo to end the season strong and build for the 2010 Judo Season.  To learn more about North Jersey Judo please visit its web site at http://www.northjerseyjudo.com/ and sign up for their newsletter.
