Welcome to North Jersey Judo specializing in Martial Arts and Fitness

What is Judo?

Judo is a grappling martial art similar to jiu-jitsu, but does NOT involve punching or kicking.  Judo places emphasis on throws, pins, and submission holds such as strangles (+13 yrs only) and arm locks (+17 years only).  From a standing position involves techniques that allow you to lift and throw you or opponents onto their backs.  On the ground, it includes techniques that allow you to pin opponents down to the ground, control them and apply various choke holds or joint locks until submission.

This past weekend Judo competitors from NJ and NY came together to compete at the Cranford Judo Invitational hosted by Sensei Yoshisada Yonezuka, US Olympic Head Coach at the 1992 and 1988 summer games and Head Instructor at the Cranford Judo Karate Center.

Charlie Cunningham from Pequannock, NJ (Team North Jersey Judo) took first place in his division going undefeated for 2 matches.  Charlie comes fresh off a long wrestling season and still at it as he prepares to compete in both wrestling and Judo this summer.

Christopher Martinelli from Pompton Plains, NJ (Team North Jersey Judo) took third place in his division.  Christopher also a Pequannock wrestler uses Judo to cross train in the off season.  Chris will be working hard to prepare for the Summer Slam this coming June.

Taylor Carmichael from Pompton Plains, NJ (Team North Jersey Judo) took first place in her division going undefeated for 2 matches.  Taylor hasn’t tasted defeat yet.  She won the New Jersey State Title early last month.

Pete Tropona from Pompton Plains, NJ (Team North Jersey Judo) competed in a big division winning 2 out of 4 matches.  This was Pete’s first Judo tournament.  Pete got the crowd to give out a “WOW” when he threw one of his opponents using a single leg for a full point throw.

Bill Paranto from Butler, NJ (Team North Jersey Judo) competed in a big division winning 2 out of 4 matches.  One of his throws was a shoulder throw for an instant win.  Look for Bill to make a bigger splash this summer on the tournament circuit.  Bill is in his last year at Rutgers University.

Derek Bustinck from Wayne, NJ (Team North Jersey Judo) competed in a big division winning 3 out of 5 matches.  This also was Derek’s first Judo tournament.  Derek, a former wrestler and wrestling coach, picked up Judo with his son Derek Jr. to cross train his son for his wrestling career that he will start in Nov of 2009.  Father and son tandem enjoy Judo very much.

Notes from Coach: All competitors did very well at this tournament.  I want to especially congratulate Peter Tropona and Derek Bustinck as it was their first action at a Judo tournament.  They both did great.  Look out for Team North Jersey Judo as we prepare to make a big impact at the Summer Slam held in June in Paterson, NJ.  Results for the Cranford Judo Invitation can be found at http://www.cranfordjkc.com/.  Special thanks to Sensei Yoshisada Yonezuka and his staff for running a great event and Billy Martin and his officials.
