(Cranford, NJ) Athletes from all areas of New Jersey and some from New York competed in the Cranford Judo Invitational Tournament this weekend.
Jorge Hernandez (Team North Jersey Judo) took 2nd place in the 200 point division. Hernandez put 2 impressive wins together on his 2 first matches. His third match was against Colton Brown from the Cranford Judo School who is a brown belt and a very good competitor. Brown was the only player keeping Hernandez from the top of the medal stand.
Charlie Cunningham (Team North Jersey Judo) took 3rd place also in the 200 point division. Cunningham lost his first match but came back to win 2 impressive matches to face Hernandez in the final for 2nd and 3rd place. His last match went to the bitter end with Hernandez scoring a ½ point waza-ari giving Charlie a 3rd place finish.
Ken Carmichael (Team North Jersey Judo) took 3rd place in the 225 point division. Carmichael lost his first mach but came back to win 2 impressive matches to face Cody Hunter from the Cranford Judo School for 2nd and 3rd place. His last match went to Hunter with a submission choke.
Notes from Coach: All competitors did very well for the first outing at a Judo Tournament. All three were in 5 man pools and placed which was great. They all have a wrestling background and currently coach recreation wrestling to children in the Pompton Plains, Pequannock area in New Jersey. Judo is a great way to cross train during the off season for any wrestler. Jorge, Charlie and Ken have seen the positives of practicing Judo and I look forward to coaching them in Judo Tournaments to come.
