Welcome to North Jersey Judo specializing in Martial Arts and Fitness

What is Judo?

Judo is a grappling martial art similar to jiu-jitsu, but does NOT involve punching or kicking.  Judo places emphasis on throws, pins, and submission holds such as strangles (+13 yrs only) and arm locks (+17 years only).  From a standing position involves techniques that allow you to lift and throw you or opponents onto their backs.  On the ground, it includes techniques that allow you to pin opponents down to the ground, control them and apply various choke holds or joint locks until submission.

The summer of 2009 was a busy season for North Jersey Judo competitors.  Our team traveled to York, PA to compete in the Keystone State Games for both Judo and Wrestling and to Baltimore, MD to compete in the Maryland ShuFu Eastern Open in Judo.  The tournament attracted competitors from all over the country.

Christopher Martinelli from Pompton Plains, NJ (Team North Jersey Judo) went 1 and 2 at the Keystone State Games.  Christopher always puts a tremendous amount of effort into practice and competition.  Christopher is also part of the Pequannock Recreational Wrestling Team.  Look out for Chris as the 2009/2010 Wrestling season approaches.

Charlie Cunningham III and IV from Pequannock, NJ (Team North Jersey Judo) competed in both tournaments this summer.  Charlie IV took second place at the Keystone State Games and took third place in Maryland.  Both father and son duo will be participants in the Pequannock Recreational Wrestling Team as coach and competitor this coming season.  These two have great determination and dedication to wrestling and show it on the Judo mat as they continue to cross-train in Judo for Wrestling.  Charlie III is a long time resident of Pequannock, NJ, a Montclair, NJ police officer and part of the Honor Guard for Montclair.

Tim Burklow and Jason Burklow from Pompton Plains, NJ (Team North Jersey Judo) competed in the Maryland tournament.  Jason walked away with a second place finish.  Here is another father and son duo who also participant in the Pequannock Recreational Wrestling Team as coach and competitor.  These two bring a physical approach to the game of Judo.  Tim is partner at Burklow & Rotella Associates in Riverdale, NJ and also a member of the Pequannock Valley Rotary.

Ramon Hernandez Jr. from Pompton Lakes, NJ (Team North Jersey Judo) competed in both the Keystone State Games and in Maryland.  Ramon Jr. took first place at both tournaments.  He has been with North Jersey Judo since the opening of its doors.  Ramon Jr. will also be participating in the Pompton Lakes Youth Soccer League this season.

William and Brandon Kui from Wayne, NJ (Team North Jersey Judo) took first place in both Judo and Wrestling at the Keystone State Games as well as in Maryland.  Both brothers show a lot of athleticism and attention to detail in Judo and their wrestling.

Note from coach: All competitors did very well this summer on the Judo tournament scene.  Next up will be the East Coast Championship held at NJIT in September and also the North East Judo Championship in Paterson, NJ in December.  We will take a different approach in the summer of 2010 by challenging our junior competitors to bigger tournament opportunities and competing in the USA Junior Nationals and USA Junior US Open.  I also would like to congradulate Ken Carmichael who is a member of our club but also was voted in as top 50 wrestlers in Bergen County history.  Ken along with Charlie teach our wrestling class at North Jersey Judo which will last until wrestling season begins in November.  To learn more about our club please visit us at http://www.northjerseyjudo.com/.
