Today team members of North Jersey Judo went to the Summer Slam Judo Tournament held in Paterson, NJ hosted by Camal Judo.  The tournament was well equipped with Zebra tatami style mats but the new enhancement to the tournament this year was state of the art tournament technology at each table running a mat equipped with a laptop computer with an extra wide screen monitor so the judges could run and score the matches.  Usually this type of change throws a big monkey wrench to the operation of any tournament but the Summer Slam wasn't affected regardless of the record heat we had that day.  Another thing I would like to mention is that the following coaches attended the tournament and were recognized: 4X Olympian, 2 Olympic Bronze Medal winner & World Gold Medal winner Jimmy Pedro, 2X Olympic US Head Coach Yoshisada Yonezuka and many others.

Aidan Cunningham (Team North Jersey Judo) took 3rd place in his first outing.  Aidan came out trying to control his opponents and made frequent attacks using Ippon Seoinage/shoulder throw like his father.  It won’t be long before Aidan is at his next tournament in medal contention.

Ramon Hernandez Junior (Team North Jersey Judo) took 2nd place in his division.  Junior came out losing his first match by a full point but came back to win his next 2 and also scored a full point using Ippon Seoinage/shoulder throw.  Junior shows a lot of heart when he’s out competing and I’m not just saying that b/c I’m his dad.  He also doesn’t let losing get to him and is always looking to compete at every Judo tournament.  This makes it a lot easier on Dad.

Charlie Boy Cunningham III (Team North Jersey Judo) took 3rd place in his division.  Charlie Boy lost his first match but came back to win his next 2 matches by points and by a full point throw using Koshi Guruma/around the neck hip throw.  Charlie boy is a very technical player and it’s only a matter of time before he gets a 1st place medal at future tournaments to come.

Daniel Killroy (Team North Jersey Judo) took 1st place in his division.  Daniel won his first match by a full point Te Guruma/single leg pick up throw for a full point throw.  His next 3 matches where won by pinning his opponents.  Daniel is a gifted athlete and has a great Ippon Seoinage/shoulder throw which I’m hoping he shows off some time soon at a tournament so I can brag about it.  Daniel will continue to do well with practice.

Joey Stambouly (Team North Jersey Judo) took 1st place in his division.  Joey was forced into a tougher division with orange belts and kids that were much heavier but managed to keep the pressure on all his opponents to capture the gold.  In his second match he was actually down in points but managed to pin that opponent.  Joey has a very strong Koshi Guruma/around the neck hip throw and we look forward to adding more throws for him to make him a more well rounded Judoka.

Ken Carmichael (Team North Jersey Judo) took 2nd place in the Black Belt division.  Today was Ken’s first time facing a black belt on the tournament mat.  Ken faced a very experienced black belt that eventually got the better of him but Ken didn’t make it easy.  Ken kept the pressure on for about 2 ½ mins attempting throws and then attacking the legs.  Ken will continue to work hard for the next 5 months for his first Hudson promotional tournament to get to the next level of Brown.

Notes from Coach:
All competitors did very well at this outing.  I look for our players to have a strong summer work out and come out firing on all cylinders for the next tournament.
